What Did We Just Witness, Hawkeye Football Fans?

Last week, I wrote a piece about Iowa’s offense under Tim Lester. The Hawkeyes have been very successful under possible Hall of Fame coach Kirk Ferentz. Kirk will deservedly have a statue in Iowa City someday, along with Hayden Fry, Dan Gable, and Caitlin Clark. Kirk has built his program on defense and special teams. The offenses under Ken O’Keefe, Greg Davis, and Brian Ferentz have been underwhelming. [I have longed for the days of a Ken O’Keefe offense for years, but I digress.] After the fir...

Will Tim Lester’s Hawkeye Offense "Scratch Where it Itches?"

I have never been this excited for one aspect of Iowa Hawkeye Football than I am right now. It feels like 100 years ago that Hayden Fry
and Bill Snyder
had the boys slinging the pigskin around Kinnick Stadium with ease. Kirk (now just slow down with that talk about offense) Ferentz is never going to be a coach who wants to air the ball out, but hiring Tim Lester is a step in the right direction. The boys still have to block, throw, catch, and run, but the past number of years have felt like th...

The Optimist’s Guide to the 2024 Iowa Hawkeyes

As a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye football fan, at least 44 of my 54 years, I’ve seen some incredibly good and bad Hawkeye football. I started following the Hawks when Hayden Fry
rode into town, and it has always been one of my passions. Other than the twilight of Hayden’s career and the couple of years for Kirk Ferentz to build the program back up, Iowa football has been the picture of consistency. I won’t say we have been spoiled, but we have been lucky to be a top-20 team going on half a century. T...

Iowa Hawkeyes Baseball: B1G Tourney

After winning two out of three games in Des Moines against Florida International University, the Iowa Hawkeyes baseball team continues west to Nebraska for the 2024 Big Ten Tournament. Interestingly, the Hawkeyes lost 2-1 on the day that ace Brody Brecht pitched. They won the next two days. Brecht only went one inning and couldn’t get the ball over the plate. Normally having Brecht on the mound results in a better outcome for the black and gold. In game two, Cade Obermueller pitched lights-out,...

Iowa Hawkeye Baseball: The Home Stretch

The idea in competitive sports is to improve as the season moves along. The Iowa Hawkeyes baseball team has yet to live up to its expectations this year, but the Hawks do have a five-game win streak going. The Hawkeyes are 23-15 (9-6 B1G) with a 16-3 record at home. Iowa swept Rutgers this past weekend, outscoring the Scarlet Knights 28-7, and took care of UW-Milwaukee 12-6 on 4/23/24. The Hawkeyes travel to Nebraska for a three-game series this weekend. The Hawks are in 5th place in the Big Ten...

Looking Back, Looking Ahead: Iowa Women’s Basketball

Do you remember that time when the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team played in back-to-back national championship games? Yeah, that was awesome!
Much has been said and written about Coach Lisa Bluder’s Hawkeye basketball team. As someone who has watched and written about 90+% of the Iowa women’s games in the last four years, I still shake my head at just how good this team was. After last year, I did not expect us to have as much success in 2023-24. I tempered my expectations after losing M...

Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes Head North for B1G Tournament

Lisa Bluder’s Iowa Hawkeyes (26-4) take the court at Target Center in Minneapolis tonight against a scrappy Penn State team (19-11). Penn State is coached by Roseville, Minnesota’s own Carolyn Kieger. Coach Kieger is always passionate, but being in front of her “home” crowd will give her and her players a little extra incentive to avenge Iowa’s 111-93 win earlier this season.
The Hawkeyes ended up winning easily that day, but Penn State played the Hawkeyes, and Caitlin Clark, tough. On the day...

Iowa Women’s Basketball: Previewing the Hawkeyes’ Top 10 Matchup with Ohio State

Through the first eight games in the Big Ten Conference, things have gone as expected. Ohio State sits atop the standings with a record of 8-0. The Hawkeyes sit a game back at 7-1. To get a more in-depth look at this game, I once again spoke with Thomas Costello of SBNation’s Ohio State site “Land-Grant Holy Land”. Costello shared the following with me:
To the coach himself, it’s playing the Buckeyes style all 40 minutes. McGuff calls it “competitive character.” Sometimes in games the Scarlet &...

Visiting Locker Room: Catching up on Iowa women’s basketball before Monday’s clash

It doesn’t get much bigger in the Big Ten conference than the No. 2 Ohio State women’s basketball versus the No. 10 Iowa Hawkeyes. On Monday, the two teams clash for their lone matchup in the 2022-23 regular season.
Each team entered as one of the favorites to compete for the Big Ten conference trophy this season, with the Hawkeyes leading that list preseason. Now, the Hawkeyes sit a game back from the Buckeyes in the standings with just over a month to go in the regular season.

Chris Street - The Ultimate Iowa Hawkeye

It was January 19, 1993. I was less than one year removed from college and I was teaching in northwest Iowa. A very small town (Ruthven) of 400 people. More about Ruthven later. I was living on my own and basically had zero social life. Iowa basketball was about the only thing that helped me get through the winter. That all came crashing down that night. I had my TV on but my volume turned down. ESPN had a picture of Chris Street on the screen. I turned it up as he was my favorite player, and I...

Iowa Women’s Hoops: Hawkeyes take on Evansville

If you like points, and who doesn’t after Iowa’s football season, make sure you head to Carver Hawkeye Arena tonight to see Coach Lisa Bluder’s team take on the Evansville Purple Aces. I’m so glad I don’t follow a team called the Purple Aces. Oh, and before I forget, holy crap public address dude for the women’s game was a tad bit loud. Like, turn the volume of my tv almost completely down loud. - Like the enthusiasm, however.
Before we look at tonight’s matchup, let’s take a look at Iowa’s fir...

Iowa Women’s Basketball: Hawkeyes Head to Madison

Coach Lisa Bluder’s squad lost a close home game to Ohio State on the last day of January. There were some pretty pivotal calls by officials (of course, it feels like the outcomes of 10% of college basketball games can be attributed to the referees) that helped sway the outcome in favor of the Buckeyes.
Caitlin Clark is single-handedly changing the perception of women’s college basketball. It seems that every week Clark is grabbing national headlines for her play.
Iowa fell to 14-5 on the seas...
